Jon Kurland brings extensive legal experience to his role at Aequitas, including 16 years as an attorney in the District Attorney's Office of Berks County, Pennsylvania. During his tenure, he served as the Chief Deputy District Attorney, overseeing cases related to intimate partner violence. Jon also has experience working in the appellate unit and as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for Berks County, where he collaborated with various agencies to facilitate federal prosecutions of complex criminal enterprises and violent career criminals.

Mike La Riviere, Consultant (IACP)
Officer Mike LaRiviere was a member of the Salem Police Department for 32 years, 6 of which he spent as a Domestic Violence Liaison Officer responsible for the DV investigations, policy/procedure development, and training. Officer LaRiviere also served as a member of the congressionally appointed Department of Defense Taskforce on Domestic Violence, and was honored with a community award from HAWC, as well as being recognized in 2002 by VAWA for his extraordinary contribution to the prevention of domestic violence. Mike has spent the last 27 years as a national trainer and consultant certified through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Mike is the current consultant for IACP on this training.

Description:
This presentation emphasizes the importance of contextual analysis in evaluating criminal responsibility at the arrest, charging, pre-trial, and sentencing phases.  Such analysis will help to ensure that the dynamics of domestic violence are properly factored into decisions about arrest, charging, plea negotiations, and sentencing, and will enhance the quality of justice for those who have been victims of abuse. The presentation also discusses the importance of danger assessments and best practices in lethality evaluation.
