Court Mandates: Scenario 1 of 3
You are a VAWA-funded advocate who’s been working with Mr. Chan, who’s in the process of divorcing his abusive wife. The defense attorney comes over and asks to speak with you separately. You go down the hall, and the attorney serves you with a subpoena, which asks you to produce all records relating to your interactions with Mr. Chan.
She then asks you how long you have been working with Mr. Chan, and when she can pick up a copy of your file. What is your response?

Court Mandates: Scenario 2 of 3
A survivor at your DVSP, Monica, accuses another survivor, Kri, of trying to break into her car. She contacts the police. Officer Carmen is new to the local PD. She has politely requested to talk to Kri and to be given any CCTV you might have of the parking lot from the day before, where the theft is alleged to have taken place. Kri has locked herself in her room and is refusing to speak to you or anyone else. (1) What do you tell Officer Carmen? Do you give her the CCTV? Why or why not? (2) What’s the most trauma-informed way to address Kri and Monica’s needs? (3) How do you respond to the alleged theft, and how do you respond to the breach of Kri’s privacy?

Court Mandates: Scenario 3 of 3
You are a VAWA-funded advocate. This is your first meeting with Asher (they/them), a survivor of sexual assault. You’re not sure how old Asher is—they look like they could be late teens, early 20s. They’re very nervous and fidgety, and they ask if everything they say to you will remain confidential. What is your response?
